Frequently Asked Chiropractic Questions

What is chiropractic?

Chiropractic is a non-invasive treatment option that focuses on enhancing your body’s ability to heal on its own through adjustments. Chiropractic is a great option before jumping into medications or surgical procedures.

What conditions do chiropractors treat?

Chiropractors can help treat and manage an array of musculoskeletal concerns including back pain, neck pain, headaches/migraines, scoliosis, sciatica, disc injuries, shoulder pain, elbow pain, wrist pain, hip pain, knee pain, ankle pain, carpal tunnel syndrome, vertigo, pregnancy, and muscle imbalance.

What is a chiropractic adjustment?

A chiropractic adjustment is a specific and controlled input to a joint to help restore normal function and mobility. This improves the function of the nervous system to allow the body to heal and regulate on its own.

Is chiropractic treatment safe?

Yes! Chiropractic care is safe for patients of all ages. Here at Dalton Chiropractic, we utilize multiple treatment options customized to each patient to ensure their safety and comfort.

How many chiropractic treatments will I need?

Most patients notice some improvement within the first few treatments, however, chiropractic works with the body’s ability to heal itself, therefore the number of appointments isn’t a “one-size-fits-all”.

What are the benefits of chiropractic care?

Chiropractic care can help reduce pain, improve mobility, retrain muscle imbalance, and improve overall function of the body. Our treatment plans are tailored to each patient’s condition and personal goals to maximize benefits.

Are there any risks associated with chiropractic treatment?

Like any treatment option, there are potential risks, however, serious complications are very rare. The most common side effect of chiropractic care is temporary soreness similar to muscle soreness after exercising. Your doctor will conduct a full examination to assess your condition and create a care plan specifically for your body to reduce any risks associated with treatment.

Are chiropractic adjustments painful?

You may feel some pressure, however, adjustments should never cause severe pain. Our doctors strive to make adjustments as comfortable as possible by using different adjustment techniques specific to each patient.

Why should I pick you as my chiropractor?

Here at Dalton Chiropractic, we take the time to listen to our patients to fully understand what is causing your pain rather than simply managing the symptoms. Our goal is to not only help you feel better but stay better and improve your overall health.

How long does a chiropractic appointment last?

At your first appointment, the doctor will take time to discuss the history of your condition with you and complete a full examination to understand the cause of your pain. After the examination, your doctor will explain what they found, discuss how chiropractic can help, and answer any questions you may have before getting your first adjustment! This first visit takes 30-50 minutes. After the first appointment, your appointments will only take 10-15 minutes to get adjusted and discuss your ongoing progress with your doctor.

How are chiropractors educated?

Chiropractors complete extensive education and clinical training before becoming licensed. After completing an undergraduate or bachelor’s degree, they must complete a 4-year doctoral program, pass 4 national board examinations, pass a physiotherapy board examination, and meet the state’s licensing requirements. To master skills in clinical diagnosis, treatment techniques, radiology, and patient care, chiropractic students spend a minimum of 4,200 classroom hours and 1,000 hours of clinical experience.

Can pregnant women see a chiropractor?

Yes! During pregnancy, the body undergoes many physical changes that are often accompanied by discomfort. Chiropractic treatment during pregnancy utilizes specific techniques to ensure care is safe and beneficial for both the baby and the mother.

Is chiropractic care addictive?

Chiropractic care does not create a physical dependence on adjustments. Throughout the progression of your care plan, treatments will actually become less frequent as your body learns to function optimally on its own.

What is the crack sound during the adjustment?

With some adjustments, you may hear a popping sound which is simply gas releasing from the joint.

Can I adjust myself?

An adjustment is a specific and controlled force applied to a precise joint that is not moving correctly. When you “crack” your own neck or back, you may get temporary relief, but it is not targeted at the restricted joint. Certain areas of the spine, specifically the neck, carry more risk if manipulated incorrectly. The best way to get relief at home is through stretches or exercises that your doctor recommends specifically for you.

Do insurance plans cover chiropractic?

Yes, our offices are in-network with many insurances. Insurance coverage may vary based on the specific insurance plan.

Can chiropractic care help with back pain?

Absolutely! Chiropractic care is highly recommended for patients with back pain. Adjustments can improve body mechanics which not only relieve pain but can also prevent future pain by maintaining proper functioning.

Can chiropractors treat neck pain?

Yes! Chiropractors treat, manage, and prevent neck pain. Adjustments, along with stretches and exercises to improve posture and mechanical function can decrease both neck pain and headaches/migraines.

Can chiropractic care help with headaches?

Yes, chiropractic is highly beneficial for both headaches and migraines. The neck and surrounding tissues play a key role in reducing both the severity and frequency of headaches/migraines.

What is the difference between chiropractic care and physical therapy?

While there is some overlap between chiropractic and physical therapy, chiropractors focus on diagnosing and treating joint restrictions to improve mobility and function. Physical therapists focus on rehabilitation and functional recovery to improve strength and muscle balance.

Can chiropractors help with sports injuries?

Yes, chiropractic care can not only help with sports injury recovery but can also help prevent future injuries by improving movement patterns and biomechanics of the body.

Can chiropractic care improve posture?

Yes! Through a combination of adjustments, stretches, and exercises, chiropractic care can help you improve your posture.

What happens during a chiropractic adjustment?

During a chiropractic adjustment, your doctor will assess the spine and your area of concern for overall function and identify any joints not functioning properly. When you receive an adjustment, you will feel some pressure and might feel a quick release. Many patients notice immediate improvement in mobility after the adjustment, while others may feel a gradual improvement over the first few treatments.

Is chiropractic safe for children?

Absolutely! When children are growing, their body is experiencing many new movements and changes. Chiropractic is important for children to ensure that their bodies are functioning properly during these big changes. Most children that get adjusted do not have pain, our goal is to keep their body functioning optimally during such an important phase to prevent pain later in life.

Is chiropractic safe for infants and newborns?

Yes! Chiropractic care for infants and newborns is very different than it is for adults. The very gentle adjustments can improve latching/feeding, digestion, bowel movements, positional preference, and more. Physical imbalances are common after birth and can play a role in meeting future milestones down the road.
